It’s official! Olive oil is good for the heart! 20 years of research studying the diet of 41,000 adults in western Europe has revealed that just one tablespoon of olive oil a day cuts the risk of dying from heart disease by 28%; two tablespoons of olive oil halves the risk. Olive oil is of course at the core of the Italian diet – which by the way is one of the healthiest diets in the world.
Olive oil is rich in healthy monounsaturated fats and polyphenols, compounds that can dampen inflammation in the body and help reduce the risk of clots. The data showed that heart death victims were among the lowest consumers of olive oil. Those who got through 29 grams or more a day were 44 % less likely to die from cardiac problems.
There are lots of ways to incorporate olive oil in the British diet, such as:
- Drizzle it on any salads, meat or vegetables.
- Use it to roast your root vegetables.
- Drizzle it over cooked pasta just before serving
- Pompeo even uses it with ice cream!
